No one drawing up a list of Donald Trump’s characteristic traits is likely to include honesty or humility. But in a way he displayed a bit of both during the speech he gave at Mount Rushmore on July 3rd.
To be sure, there were the usual absurdities. In his description of American accomplishments, he rattled off a list of inventions and then added the country was also responsible for “almost everything else that has ever been invented.” Apparently, there were never any inventions prior to 250 years ago.
He also claimed foreign investment was “pouring into the United States right now from all over the world” to the tune of $19.2 trillion. Last month his administration put out the official estimate for foreign investment in 2025. It came to a grand total of $232 billion.
Perhaps his $19.2 figure included the billions of dollars poured into the Trump family crypto scams and other businesses from places like China, Pakistan, and the Persian Gulf monarchies. Of course, this is the guy who said last year he was cutting prescription drug prices by 1000 percent or more. So, it could be just another example of him not being great at arithmetic.
He spent the first half of the speech lavishly praising America and complaining yet again that he has never been given the Nobel Peace Prize even though he “settled eight wars.” That comment showed a touch of modesty. He has settled his war with Iran alone at least eight times. He has yet to make any peace deal with Iran last, but he will no doubt do so soon since he says the Iranians are “dying to settle.”
The speech took a darker turn as Trump described what he sees as “a mortal threat to American liberty” – communism. To make sure everyone understood, he used the word 14 times.
Who are these people who comprise “the greatest threat America has ever faced?” No, not his friends Putin and Xi. According to Trump “The Communist Party is made up of illegal immigrants, criminals and everybody that doesn't want to work.” That makes one wonder if retired people fall into the last category. Who knew the AARP is a communist front.
Then Trump displayed a remarkable degree of honesty saying “We can only lose the midterms if we allow ourselves to lose the midterms (sic) if we are foolish, stupid and unwise. But if we terminate the filibuster as we should do and immediately vote for the Save America Act then we will not lose an election for a hundred years. We do that, we're not gonna lose an election for 100 years.”
So, there it is. The Commies are coming and unless Trump is saved from a Democrat majority in Congress, then all is lost. He is desperate to make that happen and avoid any adult supervision that might reveal just how corrupt his presidency has become.
He firmly believes the Save America Act can save him by preventing people who might not vote for him from having their ballots counted. He hopes the result will be not just two more years but MAGA dominance for the next century. That at least shows some modesty. The Third Reich claimed it was going to be around for a thousand years.
Trump made the point that communism had “killed 100 million people just in the last century alone.” In contrast, he claimed that “No one has ever given more to charity, ended more hunger, cured more disease or done more to uplift humanity than Americans and no country ever will be able to match it.”
Of course, that was the old America before Trump gave free rein to the richest man in the world to destroy programs to help the poorest people in the world. According to one study, that will result in 14 million excess deaths worldwide by 2030. With that many in just four more years, a century of Trump inspired generosity may enable America to exceed the grim milestone set by communism during the last 100 years.
America was great for 248 years because a dictator was never allowed to run the country. It will be great again, not because of Trump, but despite him if people pay attention to what he is saying.
